THE DOCUMENTATION required is far less than in other comparable countries. You need to prove your identity (passport or EU ID), and that you are visiting Denmark legally. If you have been married or in a civil partnership before you will need to provide proof it has legally ended.

But when you contact us, please just let us know your circumstances and we can guide you with detailed personal advice, as the requirements do vary depending on your particular situation.

  • We have recently changed how we do business - here’s the revised process. You should:

    • Send us the DIW Booking form to help us get all details right for your wedding day.

    • Discuss the application process with us, and prepare your documents

    • Submit your application to the Agency of Family Law online and pay their fee (230 kroner) - we will help you and advise you as you do it

  • Validity

    With Denmark you can be secure in the knowledge that you are dealing with a credible and respected EU country, and that your Danish marriage certificate will be valid worldwide. Some countries have special registration procedures, which we can help with.

  • Apostille and legalisation

    An Apostille from the Danish Foreign Ministry is required for non-EU countries, so your marriage is recognized. Some countries will require full legalisation through the appropriate embassy. If you’re in doubt, just ask and we’ll advise accordingly.


In the planning phase we will:

  • ensure you have the right documentation

  • assist with the approval process with the Agency of Family Law which can take anywhere from 5 days to 5 weeks depending on your particular situation.

  • when everything is approved, confirm your preferred wedding date and location with the local authorities and ceremonial Registrar, ensuring all details are in place.


After your wedding ceremony:

  • you immediately receive your marriage certificate in 5 languages: Danish, English, German, French and Spanish.

  • we can also arrange for an Apostille from the Danish Foreign Ministry or full legalisation, if needed.

Document Security

We take it seriously, and so should you. You may need to trust us with some of your most important documents (if we need to check them). So we ask you to send documents (if necessary) using a secure link, which we will forward to you – it is easy to use and safer than email. We believe we comply with the requirements of GDPR and we do not hold or share any of your details or documents other than for the direct requirements of the marriage. We delete and destroy details as soon as is practicable after the wedding. Any details we do have are held on GDPR compliant systems.

Do NOT send documents until we have advised you on which ones are needed, and how to send them.
